Welcome to Thunder Hill Speedway!!!  Come enjoy exciting IMCA Racing Saturday Night August 28th!!!  The battle for the points lead continues!

ANDERSON RULES THE HILL; CHARLES, SHOTTS, GRIFFITH, FLEAGLE ALSO TAKE WINS
On Saturday night, August 21, the O’Reilly NCRA Late Model Series made its second visit of the year.  This time differed in two respects from the first time.  First of all, the weather was great for racing (the first time had been shortened by rain), and most incredibly, Kelly Boen did not win.  John Anderson, of Omaha, took the win home.  He was joined in Victory Lane by Tom Charles (IMCA Modifieds), Jesse Shotts (IMCA Northern SportMods), Marvin Griffith Jr. (IMCA Stock Cars), and Adam Fleagle (IMCA Hobby Stocks).
Fans could have been forgiven for wondering if the O’Reilly NCRA Late Model Series was about to be renamed the Kelly Boen Benefit Series.  Boen has had perhaps the most dominant year in NCRA history, winning 11 times in his first 18 starts including the last five in a row.  At the series’ first stop at the Thunder Hill high banks, Boen simply checked out on the field.  This time, it was not to be.  Boen struggled in his heat, finishing seventh, and despite a charge through the field that kept fans on their feet, was unable to make an impression on the top three.  It took Anderson nine laps to make his way around early leader Alan Vaughn, which he held to the end.  Vaughn would finish second in front of a strong run by Delbert Smith.  Boen’s charge through the field ended in a fourth place finish, with Jason O’Brien taking fifth.  Local drivers making an impression on the field included David Conkwright finishing fifteenth, Bryan Rigsby (making his first Thunder Hill start in a late model) finishing sixteenth, and Tom Charles in 22nd.
Charles’ night got a lot better in the IMCA Modified portion of the program.  Charles has recovered from an opening night DQ to move into a chase for his first IMCA championship in over a decade.  Ironically, the beneficiary of that DQ, Jeff Herbers, is Charles’ main opponent and the point leader.  Charles was able to win for the second week in a row.  Herbers kept it close by taking second, while Travis Patch secured third.  Rick Dreasher had his best run of the year by finishing fourth, and Danny Holt completed the top five.  Herbers’ second place meant that Charles only gained a single point into Herbers’ now 13-point lead.  Brent Alverson maintains third, with Mat Stallbaumer fourth and Danny Holt fifth.
The Northern SportMod division has consistently been one of the most competitive classes, and Saturday night was no exception.  Unlike past weeks, the front row managed to hold their spots to the finish.  Jesse Shotts won the feature from the pole, and Dustin Crist used his second starting spot to finish second.  Behind them, Rich Boyden had to pass his way from ninth position to take third, Alvie Cristofferson took fourth, and Cory Larson fifth.  In the points standings, Eddie Schwope Jr. maintains his nearly season-long lead over Kyle Olberding.  Mike Taylor is solidly in third, Boyden is fourth, and Rodney Klinkner is fifth.
It has been a trying year for Marvin Griffith Jr.  Despite having held the IMCA Stock Car point lead for most of the season, Griffith hasn’t been near the win at the end of the feature since early in the year.  That all changed Saturday night, as Griffith took a well-earned checkered over Greg Deters.  Leif Weyer continued a string of strong runs by capturing third, with Matt Haid racking up another top-five finish in fourth.  Rounding out the top five was Brad Labonte.  Griffith’s win wasn’t enough to regain the point lead; he is still seven markers behind Eric Weyer in the chase for the track title.  Haid is third in the standings, with Deters fourth and Tim Lange in fifth.
At the end of the IMCA Hobby Stock feature, it appeared that Waylon Banks had racked up another feature win.  However, that changed in the tech lane, as Banks was disqualified for an aluminum intake manifold, illegal under IMCA rules.  That advanced Adam Fleagle into the winner’s spot.  Fleagle, who started the year in an IMCA Northern SportMod, earned the win on the track, having to pass much of the field from his seventh starting spot.  Point leader Brian Stich thus ended up in the runnerup spot, while Melissa Bruning continues her season long improvement with a third place finish.  Pat Streeter finished fourth, while Rodney Walker completed the top five.  Barring any significant issues, Stich’s 47-point lead over Walker may be unassailable at this late point in the season.  Melissa Bruning has now advanced into the third spot in points, with Banks fourth and Jim Streeter in fifth.
Next Saturday, August 28, the IMCA Weekly Racing Series continues at Thunder Hill.  Gates open at 4:00 PM, with the driver’s meeting set for 6:30.  Hot laps will hit the track at 7:00, with heat races to follow.  Pit passes will be $25.00.  Grandstand general admission is $10.00, Seniors 65 and up are $8.00 each, kids 6-12 are $5.00, and kids 5 and under are free.  Thunder Hill Speedway is located at 11995 142nd Road in Mayetta, KS (2 miles West of US-75 and 142nd Road).  For more information, please visit

CHARLES, OLBERDING, WEYER, FULLER ARE AUGUST 14 WINNERS AT THUNDER HILL
The August heat wave wasn’t scheduled to break until Sunday, after the races, which left a hot and fast night of racing at Thunder Hill Speedway on Saturday, August 14. When the night was over, veteran Tom Charles had returned to Victory Lane in the IMCA Modified feature. He was joined by Kyle Olberding (IMCA Northern SportMods), Eric Weyer (IMCA Stock Cars), and G.W. Fuller (IMCA Hobby Stocks).
The last few weeks, the IMCA Modified feature winner has started 9th or worse in the feature, and this week was no exception. This week, it was Tom Charles who started 10th and battled his way forward past a strong field of contenders to take another 2010 feature win. To win, Charles had to beat a determined Dave Hardesty, who started third. Hardesty held on for second. He was followed to the flag by Mat Stallbaumer, Jeff Herbers, and Travis Patch. The fourth-place finish was enough for Herbers to cling to a slim 13-point lead over Brent Alverson (who finished sixth on Saturday). Charles has had to battle back from an opening-night DQ to move to third, 14 points back of Herbers. Completing the top five are Mat Stallbaumer and Danny Holt.
At the checkered in the IMCA Northern SportMod feature, it appeared that Brandon Mitchell took the win. Mitchell did it in spectacular fashion, blowing the engine in his machine on the last lap. Mitchell’s night got worse in the tech lane, when he was disqualified for an illegal distributor, which gave the win to Kyle Olberding. Finishing second was Tyler Frye, of Belleville, KS, with Devin Stock third, Levi Gunn fourth, and Dustin Crist fifth. Olberding’s winning ways have moved him to second, 12 points back in the standings from a consistent-finishing Eddie Schwope, Jr. Mike Taylor sits third in the standings, followed by Rich Boyden and Rodney Klinkner.
Last week, the Weyer twin in the IMCA Stock Car Victory Lane was Leif; this week, Eric Weyer took the checkers. Like Leif last week, Eric Weyer was chased to the line by Tim Lange. Newcomer Trevor Thornton took third behind Lange, with Brad Labonte fourth and Matt Haid finishing fifth. Eric Weyer’s win allowed him to overtake Marvin Griffith Jr. in the point standings. Griffith, who has led the standings from the second week, is now 12 points behind E. Weyer in second. Haid holds down third in the standings, followed by Greg Deters, with Lange rounding out the top five.
G.W. Fuller made the long tow in from Salina for the IMCA Hobby Stock feature, and took the trophy back west with him. Fuller, who started eighth, won a battle with Brian Stich (who started sixth) to win the feature, with Stich in the runnerup spot. Casey Gilmore finished third, Jeff Miller fourth, and Jim Streeter in fifth. Stich continues to lead the point standings by 44 markers over Rodney Walker. Waylon Banks maintains third, Melissa Bruning holds down fourth, and Jim Streeter is fifth in the standings.
Next Saturday night, August 21, will see the return of the O’Reilly NCRA Late Model Series. Kelly Boen, who was dominant in the series’ first appearance at Thunder Hill last month, seems determined to be the whole show for the rest of the year. He scored his tenth and eleventh sfeature win of the year this weekend at McCool Junction, NE, which was his fifth and sixth in a row – a run that started at Thunder Hill. Boen is chased closely by Corey Zeitner, Jase Kaser, and Wylan Petrie in the standings. Kaser leads the rookie standings. With other area series idle on the 21st, fans are likely to see the field strengthened by those series’ top contenders. Last time the NCRA visited, the field was strengthened by drivers such as Al Purkey, Terry Phillips, Alan Vaughn, and others. The high banks are a favorite stop for many area drivers, so a strong field is expected.
Next Saturday, August 21, the IMCA Weekly Racing Series is joined by the O’Reilly NCRA Late Model Series at Thunder Hill. Gates open at 4:00 PM, with the driver’s meeting set for 6:30. Hot laps will hit the track at 7:00, with heat races to follow. Pit passes will be $30.00. Grandstand general admission is $15.00, Seniors 65 and up are $13.00 each, kids 6-12 are $10.00, and kids 5 and under are free. Thunder Hill Speedway is located at 11995 142nd Road in Mayetta, KS (2 miles West of US-75 and 142nd Road). For more information, please visit

BECKER, MITCHELL, WEYER, BANKS SCORE AT THUNDER HILL
As the dog days of summer kick in, Thunder Hill held their Fan Appreciation Night on Saturday, August 7.  While the fans were appreciated, some drivers appreciated the evening even more.  Justin Becker broke through for his first IMCA Modified win of the year, while Brandon Mitchell took a well deserved first career Northern SportMod win.  Leif Weyer brought home the checkers in the IMCA Stock Car class, and Waylon Banks kept his recent run going in the IMCA Hobby Stock class.
For Becker, the win was anything but easy, as he started deep in the pack in 11th position.  He had to pass, and then overcome the challenges of division point leader Jeff Herbers before he could take the checkered flag.  Herbers kept his string of good races going with a second place finish, while Danny Holt overcame having to go to the rear of the pack following an early incident to finish third.  Brent Alverson maintained his second-place standings in the IMCA Modified points with a fourth-place finish, and Tom Charles rounded out the top five.  As noted, Herbers maintains the point lead with Alverson second, Charles third, Mat Stallbaumer fourth, and Danny Holt’s top-five finishes of late have moved him into fifth place in the points.
In the IMCA Northern SportMod class, Brandon Mitchell’s #76 has been a familiar sight everywhere but the winner’s circle.  That changed on Fan Appreciation Night, as Mitchell used his outside front row starting spot to take a well deserved first win.  Polesitter Jeff Davis followed Mitchell to the flag in the second position, with Scott Schoemann finishing third.  Rounding out the top five were Mike Taylor (fourth) and Lance Lincoln.  At the front of the point standings, it continues to be Eddie Schwope Jr. in the lead followed by Kyle Olberding, 18 points back.  Mike Taylor holds down third with Rich Boyden fourth, and Rodney Klinkner in fifth.
Like Mitchell, Leif Weyer used the outside front row starting spot to score the IMCA Stock Car win.  Tim Lange brought his #17 home in the second position, followed by Eric Weyer, Jeff George, and Greg Deters completing the top five.   Eric Weyer maintains a seven-point lead over Marvin Griffith, Jr., with Matt Haid in third, Deters in fourth, and Lange in fifth.
In the IMCA Hobby Stock division, suddenly no one has an answer for Waylon Banks.  Banks piloted his orange Chevy to his third win in a row and fourth overall, edging early season dominator Brian Stich for the first place money.  Bret Houk improved one spot from last week, finishing third, while Melissa Bruning took her best finish of the year by coming home fourth.  Rodney Walker completed the top five.  Despite Banks’ recent run at the top, Stich holds on to a 40-point lead over Walker.  Banks is a distant third, 148 points back of the lead, with Melissa Bruning in fourth and Jim Streeter in fifth.
Late Model fans will want to mark their calendars for the NCRA Late Model Series’ second visit of the season in two weeks, on August 21.  Kelly Boen will look to repeat his Thunder Hill performance of July 24, when he dominated the field.  Boen is having one of the most dominant seasons in NCRA history, already scoring nine feature wins in sixteen starts.  Corey Zeitner and Jase Kaser hold down second and third in the point standings, while still looking for their first series win of the year.  They, along with a host of other top regional drivers, will be on hand to attempt to break Boen’s grip on the series.
Next Saturday, August 14, the IMCA Weekly Racing Series continues at Thunder Hill.
