THUNDER HILL SPEEDWAY BREAKS ICE WITH FOOL’S DAY MELTDOWN
With the weather that has been going on in theKansas/Missouri area recently, a lot of racers are starting to feel more andmore ready for racing season. That’s good, because the Thunder HillSpeedway will be opening the season both earlier and bigger than in recentyears, with a two day show called the “Fool’s Day Meltdown”on Saturday, March 31, and Sunday, April 1.
“I think maybe we’re just getting spring fever alittle early,” laughed promoter Mike Conkwright. “We’re asready as everyone else to go racing, and we thought that this would be a greatopportunity to kick the season off in a big way.” The Fool’s DayMeltdown will feature the five classes that will make up weekly competition atthe Hill in 2012; namely the IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA NorthernSportMods, the IMCA Hobby Stocks, and the new IMCA Sport Compacts. The two-dayevent will run under full and complete IMCA rules and will award National,Regional, and State points but not Track points (the Track points season willget underway April 28).
The format will be a Saturday/Sunday show with both showshappening in the daytime. “One thing that has held us back fromearly-season shows in the past has been the temperature at night during thattime of year. We prefer not to see our fans breaking icicles off their facesduring the features. But we felt a day show had a good chance of having nicedaytime weather for the races on both days, and people could be back inside atnight when it gets cold,” said Conkwright.
Hot laps, qualifying heats, and qualifying races for allfive classes will run on Saturday, with B-features and Features for each classto run on Sunday. The Features on Sunday will pay $2,000 to win for theModifieds, $750 to win for Stock Cars and Northern SportMods, $400 to win forHobby Stocks, and $150 to win for Sport Compacts.
