Lucas Oil MLRA Late Models Take on Thunder Hill Speedway

6-22-13 MAYETTA, KS - The Xtreme Motorsports Saturday Night Clash on the Hill, together with it being Abbot Manufacturing Night at the Races, equaled one extremely fantastic night of racing. If you haven’t made it to an evening of racing at Thunder Hill Speedway this year you’re missing out on one of the best racing programs in the area. Saturday night had four of our regular classes in competition including the Kansas National Guard IMCA Hobby Stocks, Belleville Motor Sports IMCA Northern Sportmods, Heinen Repair Service IMCA Stock Cars, the BSB Manufacturing IMCA Modifieds plus The Lucas Oil MLRA Late Models. Once again the track preparation lent itself to a spectacular night of racing in front of a packed house.

A huge thank you goes out to Rita and Kayla Cross, Shelbie Heir, and Melanie Potts as they worked the stands both on the grandstand side and the pit side to provide the eventual winner, Charlie from Mayetta Kansas, with $509.50 in the 50/50 drawing. The other half of the winnings will benefit the Jackson County Food Pantry. Thanks to everyone that donated to this great cause.

In The Kansas National guard IMCA Hobby Stock Division, Nathan Munhall set the pace early only to be overtaken by last week’s winner Kelly Pihl. However, Pihl was not able to hold off the teammate charge of Brian Stich and Troy Baumgartner. As the checker flew it was Brian Stich, Troy Baumgartner, Kelly Pihl, Mallory Stiffler and Patrick Thyfault.

The Belleville Motor Sports IMCA Northern Sportmods continue to provide spectacular weekly racing action. Dusty Leonard started this race from the second row inside lane and held on in a dominate fashion on his way to the checkered flag. This A-feature had several hard chargers deep in the field. Dusty was able to hold off a late race charge by Kyle Olberding on his way to the Pit Pass Liquor Victory Lane. Olberding had quite a battle for several laps with rookie driver Chas Klinkner, who had his first top five of his career. The finish went Dusty Leonard, Kyle Olberding, Chas Klinkner, Clay Hale and Brandon Mitchell.

Heinen Repair service IMCA stock cars continue to grow in numbers and put on some of the best side by side racing action at Thunder Hill Speedway. Matt Haid has really found something that works to his liking this year. Matt led several laps early on only to be overtaken by the drive to the front by Kyle Vanover. Vanover started in the fifth spot as the green flag started the race. At the stripe it was Vanover, Mike Nichols, Lance Borgman, Matt Haid and Jim Powell Jr. making up the top five.

In one of the best races of the season so far, the BSB Manufacturing IMCA Modifieds had everyone in attendance on their feet for the entire race. Scott Brown led from the pole position, but it wasn’t an easy win. Early on, Scott had to hold off an incredible charge by Jordan Grabouski. These two would swap the lead multiple times for several laps. Grabouski’s car could not continue the pace and had to leave the track, leaving Brown to hold off Kurt Johnston and Justin Becker. Several late race cautions bunched the field back up but Brown was able to emerge from this battle victorious. The final five finishing positions were Scott Brown standing proudly in the Pit Pass Liquors Victory Lane, followed by Justin Becker, Kurt Johnston, Troy Gemmill and Allen Halderman.

The Lucas Oil MLRA Late Models put on a caution free race, which had fans in attendance talking until the wee hours of the morning.  Twenty four Late Models took the green flag, and with multiple grooves of racing available they used every inch of Thunder Hill Speedway to their advantage. As the laps wound down, Tony Jackson Jr. passed Jesse Stovall for the win. The top five were Tony Jackson Jr., Jesse Stovall, Brad Looney, Will Vaught and Ryan Gustin.

Racing resumes next Saturday night at Thunder Hill Speedway’s Xtreme Motor Sports Clash on the Hill with Modifieds, Stock Cars, Northern Sportmods, Hobby Stocks and the Midwest Vintage Outlaws will be putting on the best Saturday night racing show in Northeast Kansas.
